Annexin A1 or Annexin I; ANX1; Calpactin II; Chromobindin 9; Lipocortin I; LPC-1; LPC1; P35; Phospholipase A2 inhibitory protein is expressed in most cases in the tumor cells associated with the hairy cell leukemia. The site of expression is mainly on the cell membrane, but sometimes it is seen to be expressed in the cytoplasm as well. On the other hand, the B-cell lymphomas apart from the hairy cell leukemia such as the typical splenic lymphoma are Annexin A1 negative. The normal B cells are also Annexin A1 negative (collected from various lympho-hemopoietic tissues) enabling it to be used to differentiate hairy cell leukemia from other types of B-cell lymphomas.
